Nanni Loy
Director, screenwriter, actor. He moved to Rome and, after graduating in directing at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, he began working in movies as an assistant of Luigi Zampa and a documentary filmmaker. At 32, he debuted as director (and screenwriter) together with Gianni Puccini with a thriller set in the postwar period, Parola di Ladro. In 1959 he directs, for the first time alone, L’audace colpo dei soliti Ignoti, along the lines of I soliti Ignoti directed by Mario Monicelli the year before. In subsequent years, the Sardinian director is more challenging issues with Un Giorno da Leoni (1961) and Le Quattro Giornate di Napoli (1962, with Gian Maria Volonté), which won two Nastri d’Argento and a prize at the Moscow Festival. But above all thanks to the famous line “Excuse me, can I make the soup?” (The first Italian TV candid camera) Loy won the hearts of Italians. After the two years’ TV break he works again in movies devoting himself to comedies: in 1965 he directs Made in Italy which marks the beginning of his friendship with Nino Manfredi; a friendship that continues with Il Padre di Famiglia, Rosolino Paternò, soldato ​​and Café Express. Then Testa o Croce (1983) and Mi Manda Picone (1984, with Giancarlo Giannini and Lina Sastri). His last production was A che Punto è la Notte (1994). Seventy, he died at his home at Fregene (on the Roman coast) following a stroke.
